LUPZ Flood Control at work in the Community
Komatke Project
Mission: To reduce risks from flooding by implementing structural and nonstructural solutions that minimize property damages, loss of life, support economic development, mapping, and conduct public outreach for the Community.
Vision: To provide uniform, efficient and self-sustaining flood control infrastructure and regulatory oversight that incorporates the natural characteristics of the lands while meeting or exceeding the needs for flood control for the Community.
The Komatke Flood Control Project was an endeavor to address continued impacts from flooding in the area of Komatke, District 6 of the Gila River Indian Community. Community members of Komatke continually reported impacts from flooding by the mountain. The development of the South Mountain Freeway also showed exasperation of those impacts through tribal numerical analysis. This Project began from the storm of 2014 as a drainage study to quantify impacts, develop infrastructure designs with cost estimates to address those impacts, and construct flood control infrastructure that entailed significant regional drainage solutions while meeting county, federal and tribal regulatory requirements. The Project was divided into 2 Phases to manage cost, time, development of the freeway, and differences in hydrology. The Project was completed in the Spring of 2023 and has already undergone numerous storm events with little to no reported impacts since the Project’s inception. The Project now alleviates flooding with flood protection for homes, roads, healthcare facilities, public safety facilities, tribal buildings, and utilities.
