GIS Policies

Gila River Indian Community (GRIC) Geographic Information Systems (GIS) will maintain distributed geodatabases/GIS with integrated data through the coordination of the departments that exist within GRIC, and to the extent possible, GRIC businesses and associated activities/programs/projects. GRIC GIS will be a strategic resource for the GRIC executive/administrative body (to be referred to as the “Authority”, see definition in section 4.1) and its activities that involve spatial (geographic) data, capabilities and technologies, Community members, industries, local, state and/or federal governments.

Data Dictionary

An integrated collection of computer software and data used to view and manage information about geographic places, analyze spatial relationships, and model spatial processes. A Geographic Information System (GIS) provides a framework for gathering and organizing spatial data and related information so that it can be displayed and analyzed. (ESRI)

The United States Postal Service assigns zip codes. The interior of the Gila River Indian Community has two post offices with assigned zip codes of 85147 for Sacaton, AZ and 85121 for Bapchule, AZ. Consult your nearest post office to confirm your zip code.

Google is an open-source mapping site. Addresses that appear in Google are either gathered by Google, one of its’ contracted data providers or provided by individuals submitting address information. After you have received a physical address letter from LUPZ – GIS, you are welcome to submit that information to Google.
  1. On your Android phone, or tablet, open the Google Maps app .
  2. Tap Contribute Edit map. Fix an address.
  3. Move the map to the center of the building.
  4. Enter the address information.
  5. To submit, tap Post.
LUPZ – GIS only issues physical address letters to land owners, lot assignees and tenants.

Physical address letters must be picked up at the Department of Land Use Planning and Zoning office, or can be delivered to elders and handicapped Community members.

The GIS Team surveys houses throughout the year. Team members attempt to notify the occupants of the house prior to beginning any survey activities. However, if no occupants are home, a door hanger is left explaining the reason for the visit.

Team members do not enter fenced areas without express permission from the lot assignee. The notification is left as a courtesy. The lot assignee is not required to contact the LUPZ – GIS office, unless he/she has follow-up questions.
